Hope Lutheran Church
Temecula, CA
Hope Lutheran Church is a mixed use campus designed by L & S Architects, Inc. The church is comprised of a sanctuary, ancillary spaces, offices, and a school.
The building has an overall "Mission" style. Architectural elements that respect traditional Lutheran churches (such as the church tower), have been combined with materials and finishes that correspond well with the character of the City of Temecula.
The building features beautiful articulation on all sides. A result of organizing the interior spaces by their relative functions and allowing the exterior building shape to reflect the interior layout, not hide it. The church features a few unique elements which have been designed to boost the enjoyment of facility visitors, as well as the health of its primary occupants. The following details two of these elements.
Classrooms
The classrooms will not have the typical suspended acoustical ceilings, but will instead be sloped upwards and voluminous (reflected by the exterior roof shape). They will also feature clerestory windows that receive sunlight throughout the entire day, providing wonderful natural light to the students. Natural lighting is vitally important as it increases productivity, comfort, and promotes the mental and visual health of the occupants. Additionally, the clerestory windows can be opened, along with lower windows, providing a natural cross ventilation and allowing heat to escape as it rises.
Central Courtyard
The central courtyard is another wonderful feature we are happy to have integrated in this building. It is adjacent to all of the classrooms, as well as the multipurpose room, which will provide a fantastic space for gathering of both the everyday occupants and guests. It is also strategically placed and oriented so as to receive ample sunlight throughout the day, as well as plenty of shade as it is flanked by walls. The courtyard opens up directly to the landscaped southern portion of the property, where larger gatherings can safely take place.
